Style Inspiration: The Heathers

The Heathers is one of my favorite movies from the eighties because of the dark humor. However, the clothes in this film are amazing. I especially love Veronica's, Wynona Ryder's character, sense of style. The film uses a lot of bright colors, tights, shoulder pads and has some interesting choice in hats. The blazers are great for the upcoming winter because you can always just wear them to stay warm and to add the finishing touch to your outfit, and the tights are great for skirts and dresses.  I have to warn my readers about shoulder pads. I like shoulder pads, but never again shall we allow gargantuous shoulder pads back into our lives. Massive shoulder pads went extinct in the 80's -along with the Rat Pack- and should stay that way! Anyway, so let's play with colorful tights, shoes, bags and hats this winter!

Some New Shoes

I have never been into glitter, but this season I really love it! I don't know why I have changed my mind about glitter, but it seems to go with everything, well almost anything. Anyway, these are some of my favorite shoes for this season. They seem to be versatile and great for any occasion! I usually wear dark colors during the fall, but why not play with neutral colors and glitter this fall?

Glasses with a Cause

Sorry I haven't written this week, it's finals week. Anyway, I was doing some online window shopping and I discovered glasses with a cause. Warby Parker has a similar concept to Toms Shoes, but they give a pair of prescription glasses with every purchase. I really like their designs, but I love their prices even more. Warby Parker sunglasses/glasses cost $95, with polarized lenses! So if you want to buy some new glasses, please consider Warby Park! There is nothing better than giving back!

Grandma's Bag

After the 80's era was over, my mom threw away everything in sequins, glitter, bold colors or geometrical pattern, this was a terrible idea. While all of my friends were raiding their mother's closet, I had to raid my grandmother's closet. She has some great clothes from the fifties, but recently I have fallen in love with her purses. I never thought that my grandmother's knitting bag would become so fashionable. These purses are great for a really simple and casual day. I personally think that these bags are better for the spring, but they can also work with bold sweaters. So let's raid our grandmothers' closets and find something great!

Let's Keep Everything Squared

If you watch Mad Men then you probably know about the clothes. I have always been a fan of the classic and colorful styles of the 1960's; and Mad Men builds the plot, set and characters with the clothes. The women seem to carry their confidence and sex appeal with their clothes, particularly their handbags. Well, the purses on the show are pretty remarkable and stand out. I love that designers decided to square things up this season. This fall and winter is full of squared and colorful clutches, that are perfect for any day of the week and can bring together your outfit. So remember that being a square isn't a bad thing.

The Puffy Shirt

I am a huge fan of Seinfeld, you know that show from the 90's, the one about nothing. Well, one of their most famous episodes is The Puffy Shirt. Just in case you haven't seen this episode or Seinfeld, Jerry Seinfeld is hosting a charity function for Goodwill and he has an interview on the Today Show. He promised his friend's girlfriend that he would wear one her designs, a pirate shirt or "the puffy shirt." Well, you should watch the rest of the episode because it's one of my favorites. Back to the point, I was doing some online window shopping and I found the puffy shirt! I found many puffy shirts, more like a watered down version of the puffy shirt. I guess Kramer's girlfriend wasn't completely wrong, she was just 20 years ahead of the fashion industry. I personally love these blouses with skinny jeans or a skirt.

Susie Ghahremani

I really like journals, notebooks and agendas, you can probably tell that I really liked shopping for school supplies as a kid. It was really fun for me to pick out the theme for the upcoming year, I even do it today.  Lately,  I have had trouble finding something that I like, until today. Today, I discovered Susie Ghahremani. Her stuff is cute, simple, practical and it won't hurt your wallet. Her art is really unique and practical, she comes up with clever ideas, such as the postcards from her travel journal, and applies her art. You should visit her website and check out some of the jewelry.

Shoes!

So I might have an obsession for shoes, particularly flats! I just found these on DSW's website, and they are so cute. They also come in black with bone. The great thing about flats is comfort! I know some people say great shoes cause great pain, but they don't have to. Even at 5'2, I love my flats.

Sugar Cookies, Love and Hugs

Today, my friend Gina and I decided to make sugar cookies, which were phenomenal! The recipe was really easy, thanks again to Martha Stewart. Btw, I love the recipes on her website because they are so easy to make, especially for beginners like me! You know how I told you that I bake my feelings away, well it works even better when you do it with a friend! Gina and I just baked our feelings into some amazing sugar cookies. This week has been so relaxing because everyone has been away and the school is completely empty.... So it has been a really laid back environment, since we don't have to deal with everyone's craziness. We got to watch two movies, August Rush and It's Complicated! Just so you know, watching a movie in college is a rare thing, unless it is for class, and watching two in a row never happens! I personally don't care for August Rush, but it was great to watch it with Gina! Anyway, we were so inspired by Meryl Streep's baking abilities in It's Complicated, that we decided to bake cookies. And we had the exact ingredients for these awesome sugar cookies!

Yum, yum, yum

Things Everyone Should Own

I love to make lists, I don't know why. Well, I'm not very organized and I stress, so making lists really helps me get my thoughts in order. Enough about the reason I make lists and get on with the list! I linked a product to everything on this list... Enjoy!

So I have compiled a list of things I find most useful.

1. One solid pair of cowboy boots Oh, the Texan in me.
2. A simple black blazer These are very useful because they're so versatile.
3. A simple and classic peacoat
4. Black flats! I use these almost everyday! My mom always nags that I need to change my shoes, but when in doubt wear black flats. I personally love steve madden or nine west flats.
5. The very essential black dress
6. Lace dress! I love these!
7. A great clutch
8. One very large tote I personally love marc by marc jacobs standard supply nylon totes because they last forever, don't go out of style and come in every color. Large totes=mary poppin magical/endless/bottomless bag
9. A simple skirt that can be used for any occasion. I have this blue skirt from BCBG that I always use when I don't know what to wear.
10. A signature piece of jewelry... You know that jewelry that your mom kept from the 80's, yeah, that stuff is great. Although, you can always make your own. The other day, I decided to make a little cowboy boot charm, it was easy, cheap and simple. I also love that it represents a very important part of my life.
11. Scarves! I personally love Marc Jacobs cashmere scarves because they are only $50 and the softest thing in the world. I love wearing scarves because they are practical and stylish.

Things I keep in my purse at all times!
1. An umbrella Keep this in your bag because the weather can always turn on you.
2. Burt's Bees Pomegranate Lip Balm or Rosebud Salve I have tried everything to beat the dry winter, but nothing beats these two.
3. Roll on perfume You never know!
4. Tampons So typical, but you also don't want an accident to happen.
5. A great book... I am currently reading The Cat's Cradle
6. A small notepad/journal I like to write, a lot.
7. An agenda! I forget everything....

A Texan in New England?

So ever since I moved up to Hanover I have had to integrate two things, the cold and fashion. I am not the biggest fan of Ugg boots, boat shoes, The North Face or nantucket red (ok, so nantucket red is ok, but it is too common). Anyway, the majority of my purchases this year have been sweaters, scarves and some cute boots. Oh, and I also hate rain boots, comfort is first and I am too short for rain boots, they only make me look shorter. So back to sweaters, scarves and boots. My new love for sweaters has definitely made things easier for me this season, and I really love how creative designers have been with color and texture. Of, course the following are perfect for any day of the week, especially when you only have a few minutes before class.

(zig zag jumper from chicotopia)
(from m missoni, of course they have great texture and color)
(let's keep it classic with a cable knit sweater from original penguin)

Lace Makes Everything Better

I really love lace, ever since I watched The Virgin Suicides and I fell in love with Cecilia's dress. I am so happy that it has become such an integral part of the past few seasons! You can always pair a cute lace dress with some combat boots or flats, and some black tights. You can always dress it up or down, or simply throw it on when you realize that it's 9:50 and you only have ten minutes until your 10 o'clock class starts. You can probably guess that I am a frequent victim of "my alarm clock didn't go off." Anyway, I recently discovered a great dress by Forever 21 and I wish I could buy it, but I really have to limit my budget this month. Oh well, just another great find for you!

A Few of My Favorite Things!

I love Christmas shopping! It is one of my favorite things in the world. I love to buy presents for everyone I love. It literally takes me about two months to come up with gifts for everyone in my family and group of friends. I usually come up with a theme, such as music or food, and try to apply it to my family and friends! This year, I decided to buy everyone's presents in Brazil, I was there for a study abroad program. However, after some serious online window shopping, I have come up with a list of must haves....

Pumpkin Cookies FTW

I love to bake and cook, it really helps me distress and it is almost equivalent to a great yoga session. My friends can always tell when I am freaking out because I start to bake hundreds of cookies. Needless to say, they love it when I freak out. This past weekend I tried out this great recipe from Martha Stewart! They were amazing and so soft! And dare I say it, moist! All of my friends swear that moist is a terrible word, but it's the perfect description of these cookies. I decided to skip the icing because it seemed to be overwhelming and take away from the other flavors.
